Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi became the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. What is he known for?
Mykhailo Drapatyi, 43, the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, appointed instead of Oleksandr Syrskyi, personally led a BMP group that destroyed barricades of Russian assault troops in Mariupol in 2014.
43-year-old Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi is a graduate of the Cherniakhovsky National Defense University of Ukraine. By education, he is a tank operator. He has been participating in hostilities since their very beginning in 2014.
At the start of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO), Drapatyi commanded a battalion of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade. On May 9, 2014, the battalion under his command carried out a combat mission in Mariupol.
In June 2014, he participated in a raid along the border with Russia, held Savur-Mohyla, and successfully broke through the "Izvaryne cauldron." An interesting fact — Mykhailo Drapatyi was inside the "flying BMP" that destroyed the barricade built by Russians in Mariupol.
In 2016, Drapatyi became Chief of Staff and First Deputy Commander of the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade, and from 2016-2019, he was Commander of the 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade.
During the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in southern Ukraine in autumn 2022, he commanded the operational group of troops "Kherson" and took direct part in the liberation of Kherson. In February 2024, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in May he was appointed Commander of the operational-tactical group "Kharkiv", and in November — Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On October 20, 2025, Mykhailo Drapatyi led the Joint Forces Group.
