The European Commission has fined the Chinese online platform AliExpress 550 million euros for violating the requirements of the European Union's Digital Services Act, Politico writes .
Brussels believes that the company failed to provide adequate protection to European consumers from risky and prohibited goods. According to the regulator's findings, the platform did not effectively assess potential threats, overestimated the capabilities of its moderation systems, and did not take into account the influence of recommendation algorithms on the spread of dangerous products.
During the inspection, the European Commission found that measures against unscrupulous sellers were not operating properly. Even after warnings, counterfeit goods, dangerous toys, and cosmetics continued to be sold on the platform. Furthermore, some sellers intentionally marked incorrect product categories to bypass safety checks.
Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, emphasized that the large scale of the platform cannot be an excuse for violations. According to her, online platforms must timely identify and eliminate risks for buyers.
The amount of the fine was determined taking into account the nature of the violations, their duration, and the consequences for consumers. According to the European Commission, the law's requirements were violated at least until June 2025.
AliExpress must now submit a plan by October 20, 2026, to rectify the identified shortcomings. If the company fails to comply with the European regulator's requirements, it could face new fines.
The European Commission launched an investigation into the platform in March 2024. Later, violations were identified related to assessing risks for buyers, content moderation, transparency of advertising and recommendation algorithms, as well as seller verification.
In addition, AliExpress may become a party to another lawsuit. France previously announced its intention to take legal action due to the sale on the platform of adult goods that mimic a child's appearance.
