Nolan's "Odyssey" Grossed a Record $264 Million for the Director Over the Weekend
The film adaptation of Homer's poem starring Matt Damon was released in 73 countries and showed the best results in Great Britain, France, and Italy. The IMAX format accounted for almost a quarter of the opening weekend's box office.
Christopher Nolan's film "Odyssey" grossed $264.1 million in its first weekend of global release, becoming the most successful opening in the director's career, Variety and The Wrap report.
The Universal production earned $124.5 million in the US and Canada and $139.6 million in international markets. This is the largest global debut among Nolan's films, surpassing the result of "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012), which grossed $249 million in its first weekend. These figures do not account for inflation and changes in ticket prices.
Nolan's film "Odyssey" is an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek poem of the same name, which tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who, after the end of the Trojan War, tries to return home to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
The film stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Robert Pattinson (Antinous), Jon Bernthal (Menelaus), Zendaya (Athena), Lupita Nyong'o (Helen of Troy), Charlize Theron (Calypso), Mia Goth (Melantho). Rapper Travis Scott narrates the entire film as an aoidos (ancient Greek bard).
