Passing scores for medical universities significantly decreased for the first time. FIGURES

Passing scores for medical universities have significantly decreased this year. For instance, in 2025, to study at the General Medicine faculty of the capital's BSMU on a state-funded basis, one needed to score 386 points. Now, the passing threshold has dropped to 332. Such a situation is observed for the first time. What is this connected with?

BSMU

Passing scores for other specialties at BSMU also decreased. In 2026, for the Pediatric faculty, 319 points were required (a drop of 49 points in a year), and for the Medical-Prophylactic specialization, 273 points were sufficient (a drop of 61 points). For the Pharmaceutical faculty, the drop was as much as 98 points – 283 in 2026 compared to 381 in 2025.

Only the Dental faculty remains in a relatively stable state – applicants were admitted here with a minimum of 388 points (in 2025, the passing score was 392).

Anyway, strong graduates traditionally applied to the capital's main medical educational institution – more than half of them scored over 360 points during the admission campaign. For the dental specialization, two applicants with a maximum of 400 points submitted documents.

It should be noted that for the first time at BSMU, the share of targeted enrollment places reached as much as 60% of the total state-funded places. The Ministry of Health was largely the client for these places.

The average competition across the university was 1.8-1.9 people per place.

Grodno State Medical University

To study medicine in Grodno this year, one needed to score 262 points for the General Medicine faculty (compared to 363 in 2025), 229 for Pediatrics (in 2025, the threshold was 344 points), and 279 for Medical Diagnostics (in 2025, 365 points were required).

Even for paid forms of education, which were available a year ago, the passing scores were higher than those sufficient for state-funded students this year – from 331 to 345 points.

For targeted applicants, passing scores ranged from 150 to 174, depending on the specialization. While in 2025 they constituted 80% of the total state-funded places, this year the admission plan for targeted applicants decreased to 65%.

The total number of applicants who decided to try to enter Grodno also increased – there were 200 more compared to last year, and as a result, the average competition at the university increased. The highest competition was observed at the Pediatric faculty – 1.5 people per place.

Gomel State Medical University

To study "General Medicine" at this university, it was sufficient to score 262 points (compared to 346 in 2025). For Medical Diagnostics, students were admitted with 255 points (compared to 347 in 2025), and for Medical Prophylaxis – with 248 points (compared to 316 last year).

Last year, a fairly high bar was also set for fee-paying students – with less than 305 points, there was nothing to claim in any of the faculties.

The competition for individual specialties in Gomel was more than two people per place.

Vitebsk State Medical University

This year, the Vitebsk Medical University increased its state-funded enrollment by 105 places. As a result, 333 people were admitted to state-funded places outside of targeted training.

It is known that the competition, depending on the specialization, ranged from 1.2 to 1.9 people per place, but the admission committee has not yet published the specific passing scores for state-funded places.

On the official website of VSMU, only figures for those admitted under targeted training are currently available – for General Medicine, the passing score varied from 128 to 179 points depending on the organization from which the applicant was sponsored. For the Dental faculty, targeted applicants needed to score 174 points, for Pediatrics – 134. Future pharmacists were admitted with results from 152 points and higher.

What is the reason for the drop in passing scores?

Firstly, as noted by the Ministry of Education itself, it is due to an increased admission for state-funded places. In total, 760 state-funded places were added to medical institutions across the country. Taking BSMU as an example, in 2025, 255 graduates were expected for state-funded full-time education. In 2026, there were already 601 such places.

On the other hand, the opportunity for applicants to study full-time on a fee-paying basis was entirely removed. Therefore, those who might have still wanted to apply to medical universities in Belarus decided not to risk it and not play a lottery with future assignments for two or five years.
