Belarusian citizens granted refugee status in Israel for the first time
The Israeli publication "Haaretz" reported that for the first time, citizens of Belarus have been officially recognized as refugees in Israel. This concerns a married couple who participated in the 2020 protests.
According to the publication, on August 2, four years after filing their application, the husband and wife received notification that they had been granted refugee status.
The unnamed couple, who are around 50 years old, participated in protest actions in 2020. Soon after the start of the war in Ukraine, in March 2022, after the arrest of an acquaintance, they were given to understand that they too might be next.
In April 2022, the couple left for Israel, and three months later, they applied for refugee status.
The consideration of the Belarusians' case was delayed. Therefore, they appealed to the appeals court at the Population and Migration Registry Administration. The court ruled that the state must make a decision on their case by January 2027 but denied temporary status during the waiting period.
After this, the Belarusians appealed the decision to the district court. It obliged the state to issue them a temporary residence permit until their petition is finally resolved.
According to data received by "Haaretz" from the Israeli Population and Migration Registry Administration, between 2019 and 2024, 288 applications for refugee status were considered, of which only 21 were granted.
At the same time, among the cases submitted for consideration to the Refugee Advisory Committee during this period, there had previously been no cases involving citizens of Belarus.
