One of Marc Chagall's most famous paintings, "Over the Town," has returned to Vitebsk for the first time in over a hundred years. From July 17, it will be exhibited at the Vitebsk Art Museum.
Today, specialists from Vitebsk and Moscow unpacked and inspected the painting. All work was carried out in white gloves to avoid damaging the masterpiece. Art restorer Yuri Kegelev checked the condition of the canvas. After this, the parties signed the act of acceptance and transfer of museum items for temporary storage and compiled accounting documentation.
The museum noted that organizing the exhibition required strict compliance with requirements for transportation, insurance, security, and preservation of artistic valuables. Government services, museum specialists, and business representatives participated in the preparation of the project.
The exhibition is organized in the "one painting" format: the canvas occupies a central place in a separate exhibition hall. In addition, visitors will be able to see two works by Yudl Pen, Marc Chagall's teacher, which were delivered from the National Art Museum of Belarus.
The painting "Over the Town" is considered one of the artist's main masterpieces. In it, Chagall depicted himself and his wife Bella flying over Vitebsk. The city is shown not precisely, but through the author's memories and artistic imagination, although individual historical buildings can be recognized on the canvas.
The canvas was created in 1918, when the artist lived in his hometown. In 1919, the painting was first shown at an art exhibition in Petrograd, after which it never returned to Vitebsk. Since 1929, the work has been kept in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
