20-year-old girl from the agrotown Makrany on the border with Ukraine sentenced for Hayun
Angelina Gruzinskaya was tried for "facilitating extremist activities". She graduated from school in 2023.
Angelina Gruzinskaya is 20 years old. She was born in the agrotown Makrany, Malaryta district, which is only three kilometers from the border with Ukraine. There she studied at the local school, which she graduated from in 2023. During her studies, the girl participated in school competitions and Olympiads.
Afterward, Angelina moved to Brest to study.
Recently, the girl was sentenced under parts 1 and 2 of Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code, for facilitating extremist activities. The exact circumstances of her case are not yet known, but it appears the prosecution is related to the Hayun case.
Gruzinskaya was sentenced to restricted freedom (home chemistry), but the exact term is unknown.
Mass political repressions in the country began after 2020. At that time, Alexander Lukashenka lost to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya but did not cede power to her, instead forcing her to leave the country. This sparked massive popular protests involving millions of people. In response, the authorities initiated arrests.
According to estimates by the security forces association 'Belpol' and human rights activists, the names of at least 9,594 people who faced politically motivated criminal charges are known. In total, one form or another of political repression (criminal cases, administrative charges, dismissals, searches) affected about 500,000 Belarusians. Several hundred thousand people were forced to leave the country.
The Belarusian authorities consider "extremism" to be the demand for free elections with transparent vote counting, as well as practically any criticism of the authorities, pro-Russian historical narratives, or expressions of solidarity with Ukraine.
