A Belarusian criminal, once sentenced to death, dies in a Russian prison

Oleg Harbunou served over 20 years of a life sentence in Mordovia. But he was buried in Belarus.

At one time, Belarusian Oleg Harbunou received a death sentence in Russia for a package of criminal charges — murder under aggravating circumstances, theft, intentional destruction of property, and document abduction.

Initially, the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court sentenced him to capital punishment. However, since Russia introduced a moratorium on executions in 1997, Harbunou was fortunate — instead of death, he received a life sentence.

He served his sentence in penal colony No. 1 in Mordovia, which holds about 150 life-sentenced prisoners. Harbunou lived there from October 5, 1999, to April 24, 2022, until his death.

On the same day, the colony administration informed his wife of his death by telegram. Two days later, his wife's authorized representative picked up Harbunou's body for burial in Belarus.

This story became known only now, four years after Harbunou's death, thanks to a completely different, purely bureaucratic matter. Around $70 remained in his account at the colony. His wife had not claimed the inheritance, so they were deciding whether the money could be taken into the Russian budget.
