According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as of Monday, 2,473 cases of the disease had been registered in the country. At least 737 patients are in isolation or undergoing treatment in medical facilities.

Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, reported that the death toll has reached 1,031 people. According to him, people continue to die due to a lack of vaccines, medicines, and funding to combat the epidemic.

The World Health Organization assesses the current outbreak as the third largest in the history of Ebola surveillance in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The epidemic began on May 15 in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The Congolese province of Ituri became the main focus of the infection's spread.

Last week, Oxford University began the world's first clinical trials of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus – one of the types of ebolavirus that caused the current outbreak of the deadly disease.
