Lukashenka: If you don't want Uzbeks, you need to "buckle down and work"

On July 23, Alexander Lukashenka, while considering personnel issues, once again commented on the possibility of attracting labor migrants from Uzbekistan to the country.

Lukashenka noted that this topic had caused widespread discussion. According to him, if Belarus has enough of its own labor resources, there will be no need to invite foreign workers. However, some regions are experiencing a shortage of personnel.

Lukashenka complained that "a whole storm" had erupted regarding the topic of labor migration:

"Oh, they're taking Uzbeks!" I [say]: "And there's no need, we won't take anyone, but then we need to buckle down and work."

Lukashenka stated that enterprise managers, together with the chairpersons of district executive committees, should independently determine whether they need workers from Uzbekistan, as well as how many people and for which specialties need to be invited. He emphasized that no one would be forced, and foreign workers would only be attracted where it is truly necessary. As an example, he named certain districts of Grodno region, including Ostrovets.

Lukashenka also noted that one should not expect the arrival of already ready highly qualified specialists. Reportedly, some people will have to be additionally trained or retrained. He named the desire to work as the main condition.

Lukashenka reported that the issue of employment for citizens of Uzbekistan was discussed during a meeting with the president of that country. According to him, the Uzbek side is also interested in cooperation in agriculture. Uzbekistan is ready to invest funds in the construction of livestock complexes, facilities for fodder storage, and processing enterprises, as well as to send its workers to work in Belarus.

According to Lukashenka, the Belarusian side is ready to provide such workers with social guarantees, including housing, access to education for children, and medical care. At the same time, he noted that the situation would be different if a person comes only to earn money and send it home.
