Russian detained in Poland, planned to kill Ukrainian with US passport

Polish services have detained a Russian citizen who, according to Polish authorities, was recruited by Russian special services to organize the assassination of a dual US and Ukrainian citizen. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced this on August 13, writes Onet.pl.

The Russian was detained on August 7 as a result of a joint operation by Poland's Internal Security Agency and the police.

According to Tusk, the intended victim was a person holding two passports — American and Ukrainian. The Polish Prime Minister stated that this person was "inconvenient" for Vladimir Putin's regime, but did not reveal his name.

According to Polish authorities, the assassination was planned to take place in Warsaw. Tomasz Siemoniak, coordinator of Polish special services, also confirmed that the assassination was to occur specifically in the Polish capital.

Tusk called this case particularly serious because, according to him, it is the first known situation where a person from Russia planned an assassination attempt on a US citizen on the territory of another NATO country — Poland.

The Polish Prime Minister thanked the Polish services for the operation carried out, as well as the American special services for their cooperation, thanks to which, according to him, the planned assassination was prevented.

Tusk also stated that Polish authorities must assume that the Russian regime may try to physically eliminate people it considers inconvenient. In this regard, he promised to intensify the activities of Polish services.
