Former head of Russian penal colony where Navalny and other political prisoners were held gets 7 years for bribery
Alexander Mukhanov, the former head of penal colony No. 2 in Pokrov, Vladimir Oblast, has been sentenced to 7 years in a strict-regime penal colony for receiving a large bribe. In addition, the court ordered him to pay a fine of 1.5 million Russian rubles (17,800 dollars), reports Sota outlet.
Since 2019, Mukhanov headed penal colony No. 2 in Pokrov. In various years, this colony held well-known Russian political prisoners, including Alexei Navalny, defendants in the so-called "Mayakovsky case," former Moscow municipal deputy Alexei Gorinov, and nationalist Dmitry Dyomushkin.
After Mukhanov's arrival, according to lawyer Maria Eysmont, a regime of constant and complete control over prisoners replaced overt physical violence in the colony.
In 2025, it became known that this institution would be closed and prisoners transferred to other colonies. After this, Mukhanov took charge of women's colony No. 1 in the village of Golovino, Vladimir Oblast. However, he was detained in the autumn on suspicion of receiving a bribe.
According to investigative materials, the grandmother of a 23-year-old inmate, who was serving a five-year sentence for robbery, asked through a former colony resident to transfer her granddaughter from the sewing brigade to another job. Mukhanov, the investigation claims, demanded 150,000 rubles (about 1,800 dollars) for this.
As a result, the court found the former head of the colony guilty of receiving a large bribe and sentenced him to seven years in a strict-regime penal colony.
