Belarusians opened a cafe in Buenos Aires where draniki are served all day long

Belarusians opened a cafe with draniki, La Papa, in Buenos Aires. One of the founders, Yulia Lakatkova, worked in marketing before moving from Minsk. She opened the cafe with her husband and their chef-relative, writes the Argentine publication Clarin.

Yulia saw potential in draniki: their versatility and the growing interest of Buenos Aires residents in healthier dishes helped her define the concept.

At La Papa, draniki are served at any time: for breakfast — with avocado, egg, or gravlax salmon (raw salmon marinated in salt, sugar, and dill), for lunch — in portions of five with salmon and cream cheese. You can also choose one of five homemade sauces — pepper, sour cream, cream cheese, aioli, or barbecue — and add fried meat, mushrooms, salmon, scrambled eggs, or avocado to the draniki.

There are also waffles made from the same potato dough — with avocado and scrambled eggs. Another option is the "Belarusian tostada": two potato toasts with guacamole and salmon. The family is also experimenting with a new dish — an empanada made from potato dough instead of the traditional one.

The main principle of the cafe is the complete absence of gluten. "After opening, we realized how important it is for Argentina to find delicious and reliable gluten-free food. Therefore, nothing containing gluten enters our establishment," says Yulia.

According to her, most of the questions she receives on Instagram concern this very topic.

“Our dream is for draniki to one day become as well-known and popular as sushi or corn dogs. And why not? Argentinians adore potatoes, and draniki have everything to make them like it. They are cooked right in front of you, come out golden and crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and can be combined with various sauces and toppings,” Yulia is confident.
