Russia declared the son of the US Secretary of Health wanted. He fought for Ukraine
Conor Kennedy, the 32-year-old son of US Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been declared internationally wanted in Russia, the Independent reports . The Russian side accuses him of participating in the war on Ukraine's side and calls him a "foreign mercenary."
Relevant documents were sent to the Moscow City Court. If detained in Russia, Kennedy could face seven to ten years in prison.
Conor Kennedy joined the International Legion of Ukraine in 2022. In October of the same year, he publicly stated that he went to fight after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
According to Kennedy, he was deeply moved by what was happening in Ukraine and wanted to help. When he learned about the International Legion, he decided to join it and went to the embassy the very next day to sign up.
Kennedy also said that he informed one person in the US and one person in Ukraine about his whereabouts, and also told them his real name so that family and friends would not worry. At the same time, he emphasized that he did not want special treatment because of his background.
In his publications, Kennedy stated that the war in Ukraine could determine the fate of democracy in the 21st century. He also called on other people to join the International Legion, help at the Ukrainian border, or send medical supplies.
The Russian side claims that Kennedy allegedly fought as part of the Ukrainian army in the Kharkiv region, posing as a local resident.
Similar accusations have been made in Russia against other foreign volunteers who fought on the side of Ukraine. Among them are mentioned citizens of the USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Colombia, and the Czech Republic.
According to the Ukrainian side, about 16,000 foreign volunteers may now be fighting as part of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. They represent at least 72 countries around the world. At the same time, according to the Ukrainian military ombudsman Olga Reshetilova, almost 40% of foreign military personnel are citizens of Latin American countries.
