Hamas announced the dissolution of its government in the Gaza Strip
The Palestinian group Hamas announced the dissolution of the structure that had governed the Gaza Strip for almost two decades. The head of the so-called Emergency Management Committee, Mohammed al-Fara, resigned, and the body itself ceased its activities, Euronews reports .
Hamas stated that this decision is intended to facilitate the transfer of civilian administration to the National Committee for Gaza Administration (NCAG), headed by Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath.
According to representatives of the movement, the dissolution of the government is a "gesture of goodwill" and indicates a readiness to relinquish direct control of the Gaza Strip to advance a political settlement.
Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, following armed confrontation with the Fatah movement. After the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel came into effect in October 2025, the group repeatedly stated its readiness to transfer civilian powers, but the issue of its disarmament remains unresolved.
The National Committee for Gaza Administration could not begin its work in the enclave for several months, as its entry there was reportedly blocked by Israel.
Hamas representatives also stated that they had informed other Palestinian political forces of their decision during a meeting in Cairo. According to them, the negotiators welcomed this step as an opportunity to accelerate the transition to a new system of civilian governance.
Despite this, key issues of the second phase of post-war settlement — the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the future governance system of the Gaza Strip — still remain subjects of contention.
