"We have lost a man without whom no performance could go on. Every production that is running today and will run tomorrow will preserve the memory and gratitude to Mikhail for his fruitful work and dedication," the Puppet Theater collective announced today about the loss.
Mikhail Mayeu worked at the Minsk Puppet Theater since 2022. Before that, he served at the Kupala Theater, where he was once an important figure, having gone through all stages of backstage life. In old programs, his name was listed in the line "Performance led by..." — he worked as an assistant director, then was head of the troupe, and eventually became head of the artistic and production department. It was he who fully ensured the technical side and the launch of the Kupala Theater stage after its large-scale reconstruction in 2013.
In August 2020, Mikhail openly expressed his civic stance by signing a joint appeal from famous artists and doctors to the authorities against violence.
Remaining in the position of deputy general director for the artistic and production department in the devastated theater, in November 2020, he ironically commented on the authorities' attempts to hold castings to recruit a new troupe:
"There will be no theater! At least not this season. Until the situation changes."
In 2022, Mikhail Mayeu moved to the Belarusian State Puppet Theater, where he worked until his last days.
