French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that Zelensky's open letter to Putin could allow progress in a peaceful settlement in Ukraine.

"I think this is a good initiative, and it's good that negotiations can resume," Macron told reporters in Montenegro.

"I would like progress. I would like President Zelensky to make progress in a settlement with President Putin," the French leader added.

He recalled that France has always supported the idea of direct negotiations.
