According to the official, the number of most wild animal species continues to grow in the country. Thus, by the end of 2025, there were 1289 bears and 2556 lynxes in Belarus, which is significantly more than a year earlier.
A particular concern for specialists is the growth in populations of foxes and raccoon dogs, especially in the western regions of the country. These animals can be carriers of rabies, which is dangerous for both humans and domestic animals. Therefore, the state continues to take measures to regulate their numbers.
Since hunters' interest in fur harvesting has significantly decreased, contests are organized and even cash rewards are provided in certain areas to stimulate hunting of these predators.
The Ministry of Forestry also proposes to reduce the sizes of territories around populated areas where hunting is currently prohibited. This is due to the fact that foxes increasingly settle near people, finding easy food sources there.
As for the list of hunted species, no significant changes are expected. Previously, the possibility of including the tarpan-like horse and the swan was discussed, but these proposals did not receive support. Specialists note that Belarusians traditionally perceive the horse as a helper of man, and the swan as a symbol of fidelity.
However, raccoons may be included in the list. This introduced species is actively spreading throughout Belarus and can displace local animal species. Therefore, its population is planned to be regulated through hunting.
