The number of political prisoners sharply decreased — by almost 100 people. Why?
In recent weeks, the number of political prisoners on the Viasna website sharply decreased — from 922 to 839 people, while there's no news of mass releases. A human rights defender from Viasna explained to Nasha Niva what happened.

As of early April, the total number of political prisoners was 922 people.
On April 20, another 9 people were added to the list, but the number is now significantly smaller than two weeks ago — it's 839 people. Where did almost 100 political prisoners go?
A human rights defender from Viasna explained to Nasha Niva that the center decided to conduct a list review:
«We collected information, including from former prisoners, about those who have already been released. And accordingly, we changed the status of such people to 'former political prisoner'. We also verified who was definitively supposed to be released after their term ended, and also removed these people from the list of political prisoners».
At the same time, Viasna soon plans to grant political prisoner status to new Belarusians whose persecution has now become known.
