The President of Ukraine stated after a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Sunday that they will meet this week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, writes UNIAN.
This meeting comes amidst White House efforts to mediate an agreement between Russia and Ukraine on mutual measures to de-escalate the conflict and resume negotiations, as well as against the backdrop of an escalation in hostilities between the two sides observed in recent days.
Zelenskyy's chief negotiator and head of Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, Rustem Umerov, told Axios that in recent days he has been working with White House representatives to arrange the meeting, which is expected to take place on Tuesday, September 22.
The meeting will take place a few days after Trump signed a law sanctioning Russia and approved the largest arms supply agreement between the US and Ukraine since he took office – two steps that Ukraine had been pushing for months.
"It was an important conversation, and we discussed many issues. We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting can change a lot. There is now diplomatic momentum," Zelenskyy wrote on the social network X.
