The grape harvest is currently underway on Belarusian plantations. Here, both foreign varieties adapted to local conditions and original developments by Belarusian breeders are cultivated .
One of the latest achievements of scientists is a variety whose berries taste and smell like strawberries. It was created through targeted selection of hybrid seedlings. Breeders aimed to simultaneously increase the frost resistance of the vine, its resistance to diseases, and obtain unusual taste qualities.
The new variety has already been evaluated during tastings. The berries turned out firm and sweet, with a distinct berry aftertaste. However, mass sales are still far off — the variety must pass state varietal trials.
Amateur gardeners also contribute to the development of viticulture. They experiment with foreign varieties, look for ways to protect plants from frost and diseases, and use greenhouses, shelters, and various methods of bush formation.
Not long ago, grapes in Belarus were considered an almost exotic crop, but now their cultivation is becoming increasingly common. New Belarusian varieties show that even in a temperate climate, it is possible to obtain a high-quality harvest with unusual taste properties.
