"What a waste of money." Lida is building its first underground passage, which no one needs
"Why didn't you build it somewhere in the middle of a field?"
During the reconstruction of the bypass road in Lida, the city's first underground pedestrian passage will be built. The authorities present it as one of the project's main news: the passage will be equipped with a lift and adapted for people with disabilities. However, Lida residents themselves do not understand why such an expensive object is needed. Lida residents want a regular crossing, not an underground one.
The underground passage will appear near the hypermarket and the turn to Borovka. "Grodnoavtodor" promises that it will meet modern requirements, and a lift will be provided for people with limited mobility, writes BGmedia.
It was the accessibility of the crossing that raised specific questions. "I wish they'd put that engineer in a wheelchair. And see how he uses it," writes one resident.
Others remind about dachniks (cottage owners) who travel here with bicycles and will now be forced to go underground.
Another popular question is why an underground passage is needed here at all, given the comparatively small pedestrian flow.
"Who will use this passage? What kind of pedestrian flow is there?", "Why didn't you build it even further away, in the middle of a field?", "What a waste of money," Lida residents complain.
Some suggest a much simpler solution – a regular regulated crossing with a button.
Others point out that there are plenty of roads around Lida that need repair, so they consider the construction of the city's first underground passage specifically here a strange priority.
There is also another concern – water. Residents immediately recalled places in Lida that are regularly flooded after rains. "Don't forget to make a storm drain so the passage doesn't flood," they ironize in the comments. Another user responds: "Why a storm drain? The passage will smoothly turn into a swimming pool."
The underground passage itself is only part of a major reconstruction of the bypass road. In 2024, an updated section 4.3 kilometers long has already been opened here, and in April 2026, road workers began on the next 3.8 kilometers. The cost of the current stage is 42 million rubles, with funds allocated from the republican budget. Work is planned to be completed in October 2027.
The road will be widened to four lanes with a dividing strip, lighting will be installed, along with pedestrian and bicycle paths. In addition to the underground passage, the project provides for five regulated ground-level crossings. The authorities expect that the updated bypass will increase throughput and allow part of the transit traffic to be diverted from the center of Lida.
