The farewell ceremony for Maya Kliashtornaya, a renowned architect and daughter of the poet Todar Kliashtorny, who was executed during the Stalin era, will take place tomorrow, August 4, at the St. Elisabeth Convent at Vygotskogo, 2, at 10:00 AM, her family announced .
Maya Kliashtornaya was a well-known architect who did much to perpetuate the memory of the victims of Soviet repressions; she was the scientific director of the "Kurapaty" memorial.
Maya Kliashtornaya was born on May 31, 1937, half a year after her father's arrest, but her mother managed to secure a meeting. "Mom saw Dad, Dad saw a premature but living infant," the woman later recounted. Her mother was only 3 months old at the time of the interrogation.
Her father was executed on October 30, 1937, along with over a hundred representatives of the Belarusian bureaucracy, science, and culture elite.
"My mother was told: 10 years without the right to correspondence, and she believed it – both in the Akmolinsk camp and later during her exile in Siberia, she wondered why my father wasn't looking for us, 10 years had passed, 'he's probably already home and waiting for us.'"
Her mother and Maya were exiled to the Akmolinsk camp for such wives of "enemies of the people" (ALZHIR), and the girl was placed in a camp orphanage. Her mother only took her back in 1947 because she had two additional years added to her 8 years in the camps.
They did not return to war-ravaged Belarus at that time, living in a settlement in the Omsk region. Maya had significant problems with her spine; she was confined to a hospital bed for seven years.
Maya returned to Belarus in 1955, finished school in two years, then the Minsk Architectural and Construction College, and entered the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute. She returned to Belarus as a certified architect, working at "Belpromproekt" in the general planning department, where she dealt with urban development issues.
One of her main life goals was to learn as much as possible about her father, Todar Kliashtorny.
Ms. Maya could always be seen at the marches in Kurapaty.
