Germany Prepares to Officially Accuse Russia of Preparing an Attack in Leipzig and Impose "Massive Sanctions"

German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to information from German and European media, is preparing to hold Russia responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and announce new strict sanctions.

According to three German officials familiar with the situation, a corresponding statement could be made early next week. It could be timed to coincide with an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland.

On August 4, a drone with explosives was found on the territory of Leipzig/Halle Airport. It was located near a Ukrainian military transport aircraft used for carrying military cargo. The investigation suggests that the drone might have been intended for an attack on the aircraft.

Later, German investigators found another drone near the airport, and the next day — about 50 grams of explosive material, likely hexogen (RDX).

According to The Wall Street Journal, American intelligence believes that Moscow is directly linked to the drone found in Leipzig. Russia denies its involvement. However, German authorities have not yet disclosed what new evidence could allow them to officially accuse Russia.

Merz previously stated that the incident points to very real threats and that the perpetrators of hybrid attacks will "pay" for their actions. Berlin emphasizes that a final decision will be made after the assessment of the investigation results is completed.

Officials are calling Germany's possible new course Zeitenwende 2.0 — referring to the country's defense policy overhaul after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Possible measures include increased sanctions against Russia and greater military support for Ukraine.

Berlin's decision could also have been influenced by a cache near the German capital, where two semi-automatic pistols and a large quantity of ammunition were found. Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office is investigating this case as a suspicion of preparing a serious crime threatening the state.
