New President Elected in Estonia

The Estonian parliament has elected 51-year-old lawyer Ülle Madise, who has served as Chancellor of Justice since 2015, as the new president. She will replace Alar Karis in this position in October.

During a secret ballot, Madise was supported by 71 out of 78 members of parliament. To win, it was necessary to secure at least 68 votes.

Ülle Madise will become the second female president of Estonia. Kersti Kaljulaid previously held this position from 2016 to 2021.

Madise has a background in law: she earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Tartu, as well as a doctorate in public administration from Tallinn University of Technology. As Chancellor of Justice, she led an independent body that oversees compliance with laws and serves as an ombudsman.

The president in Estonia performs primarily representative functions.
