"Alternative for Germany" provisionally wins elections in second region
In the elections to the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, AfD, according to initial exit poll data, takes first place with 37 percent.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) receives 35.5 percent. In third place is "The Left" party (Die Linke) with 7.5 percent.
The Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and "Alliance 90/The Greens" (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) each receive 5.5 percent.
For the CDU, this is the worst result in state elections in the party's history. Chancellor Merz has already called it a catastrophe.
"Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance - Reason and Justice" (BSW) receives exactly five percent.
This is already the second German state in two weeks where AfD comes in first place. On September 6, the party won the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, gaining almost 44 percent of the votes.
