400 vessels and about 6000 sailors stranded in the Persian Gulf since the start of the Middle East conflict
Six months after the start of the conflict in the Middle East, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains uncertain. About 400 vessels and approximately 6000 sailors still cannot safely leave the Persian Gulf. This was stated by Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the UN.
According to the international official, thousands of sailors in the region continue to work in conditions of increased danger. Some vessels, along with their crews, have already managed to leave the Gulf, but about 400 vessels have not been able to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the conflict.
Arsenio Dominguez stressed that the crisis has both short-term and long-term consequences. Disruptions in vital supplies of fuel, fertilizers, and other goods affect not only the countries of the region but also economies and populations worldwide.
In July, the IMO Council adopted a resolution on the protection of important maritime routes. It confirmed that the right of transit passage through international straits should not be restricted, violated, or suspended.
The head of IMO called on states and representatives of the shipping industry, together with the UN, to seek practical solutions that would allow the restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He also noted that the worsening security on maritime routes — from the Black and Red Seas to the Gulf of Aden — creates problems for the entire world and particularly strongly affects thousands of sailors who have no connection to the conflict.
In late June, IMO suspended its vessel escort operation through the Strait of Hormuz after reports of an attack on one of the vessels.
