229 Unidentified Bodies Buried in Nepal. Hundreds of Flood Victims May Remain Unidentified
After the devastating floods in Nepal, rescuers faced an extremely difficult task – identifying hundreds of deceased. Many bodies are so severely damaged that it may never be possible to identify them, writes Bild.
According to information from the Nepalese police, as of August 29, the bodies of at least 626 deceased were found. Approximately 2,500 people are reported missing. There are also dead and missing people on the Chinese side of the border: 554 people are reported missing there.
A particularly difficult situation has developed in the Chitwan district, where the bodies of 233 people were found. Since many of them had already begun to decompose, and there are no facilities to preserve bodies in cold conditions, authorities began burying the unidentified remains. According to Nepal News, 229 people have already been buried. Before this, DNA samples were taken from them and identification numbers were assigned.
Identification is also complicated by the fact that strong currents could have carried bodies approximately 100 kilometers, Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal told Reuters. Many of the deceased suffered very significant body damage.
According to the Kathmandu Post, rescuers along the rivers are finding not only intact bodies but also separate limbs and torso parts. In the Nawalparasi-East district alone, the bodies of 154 deceased were found. In 49 cases, it was not even possible to determine the sex of the person.
Therefore, investigators are trying to find other signs for identification – clothing, jewelry, fingerprints, and tattoos. If these methods yield no results, genetic DNA testing remains the last option.
