"We are obligated." Russian State Duma Deputy Called for a Nuclear Strike

Russia should launch a nuclear strike on Ukraine to force its surrender, stated State Duma deputy and leader of the "Rodina" (Homeland) party, Alexei Zhuravlev. In his opinion, "we must strike in such a way that the enemy understands they must capitulate," writes The Moscow Times.

"There are discussions: can we use tactical nuclear weapons, or can't we? Listen, such a discussion shouldn't even exist! If necessary, we are obligated to use it... If we need to strike — we will strike. And this is not up for discussion," he said.

Earlier, sources close to the Kremlin told Bloomberg that President Vladimir Putin is preparing for escalation in Ukraine and may resort to tactical nuclear weapons as a last resort to prevent defeat in the war.

On August 25, US CIA Director John Ratcliffe unexpectedly arrived in Moscow. Axios sources stated that he tried to ascertain if Putin could be deterred from escalation and persuaded to return to negotiations about ending the war.

The New York Times reported that Ratcliffe gave a "bleak assessment" of the prospects for the Russian military and economy and urged to conclude an agreement before it was too late.

After the CIA director's visit, Russia conducted tests of a nuclear missile capable of reaching the US, the name of which the Ministry of Defense did not disclose.

So far, there are no signs that Putin is preparing to use nuclear weapons, Bloomberg noted. Russia's partners, including China, are strongly against it and have strictly warned the Kremlin against such a step.

The administration of former US President Joe Biden also warned Putin about the consequences of a nuclear strike. At the time, the White House stated that the response would be a conventional strike by US Armed Forces on Russia, recalled Fiona Hill, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former advisor to three US presidents.

Putin, according to her, is testing how far he can go before people concede to him.
