IT specialist from Mozyr sentenced under several political articles and thrown behind bars

Web developer Yury Filomenko was tried for aiding extremist activities, defaming Lukashenka, and discrediting Belarus.

Yury Filomenko from Mozyr is 39 years old. He was involved in creating websites and web services.

Besides programming, the man is interested in the crypto industry and mining. On thematic forums, he shared his experience and thoroughly exposed unscrupulous courses.

The exact circumstances and date of Yury's detention are unknown. He was tried in the Homel Regional Court under several political articles of the Criminal Code: Parts 1 and 2 of Art. 367 (defamation of Lukashenka), Art. 369-1 (discrediting Belarus), and Parts 1 and 2 of Art. 361-4 (aiding extremist activities).

The man faced up to seven years in a penal colony. The exact sentence is unknown, but based on the combination of articles, Yury was facing imprisonment.

Mass political repressions in the country began after 2020. At that time, Alexander Lukashenka lost to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya but did not cede power to her, forcing her to leave the country. This sparked mass popular protests involving millions of people. In response, the authorities initiated arrests.

According to calculations by the association of security forces "Belpol" and human rights defenders, the names of at least 9,594 people who faced politically motivated criminal cases are known. In total, various political repressions (criminal cases, administrative charges, dismissals, searches) affected about 500,000 Belarusians. Several hundred thousand people were forced to leave the country.

The Belarusian authorities consider "extremism" to be the demand for free elections with transparent vote counting, as well as virtually any criticism of the authorities, pro-Russian historical narratives, or expressions of solidarity with Ukraine.
