Statkevich: A situation may arise for Belarus where all states around us will have nuclear weapons
The politician and former political prisoner commented on the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the issues of nuclear weapons use discussed there in his Telegram channel. He titled his article "Dances with bombs, or Demonic Possession".

"The other day, an economic forum took place in St. Petersburg, attended by representatives of Russian ruling and economic elites. In some of the reports delivered at the forum, calls were made, in essence, for Moscow to use nuclear weapons.
If such calls are made at Russia's most representative state event and in official reports there, it is a clear signal to the world about the readiness of the Russian authorities to escalate their conflict with the West into a nuclear format. Even if this is only an attempt at intimidation, it already demonstrates the reality of such a development. What are the true initiators of these 'dances with nuclear bombs' counting on? To scare the West? But will this stop it from supporting Ukraine? Rather the opposite. Seeing the obvious inadequacy of the leadership of a nuclear state, they will, firstly, increase aid to Ukrainians in the hope that they will stop the inadequates before they reach NATO countries.
Secondly, the real nuclear threat from Moscow will force the West to also prepare a nuclear response to make the cost of nuclear aggression against NATO unacceptable to the aggressor. And now France is concluding agreements with NATO countries neighboring Russia on the deployment of French nuclear weapons on their territory during a threatening period.
Now the United States is negotiating with Lithuania on the deployment of American nuclear weapons on its territory. I believe that now the leadership of Ukraine cannot but think about the possibility of creating such weapons, because otherwise, nuclear blackmail will become a permanent part of Ukrainian-Russian relations.
For Belarus, a situation may arise where all states around us will have nuclear weapons. The same kind as those already deployed on our land.
Only our neighbors will, in crisis situations, make their own decisions on the use of these weapons, while Belarus will be made a target for Moscow's retaliatory nuclear strikes, without even warning us about it.
The main question that arises is – what sense do they see in the Kremlin in this mutual nuclear self-destruction? Will Ukrainians stop hating Russia for everything done to them, and, shaking off radioactive ash, run into the "Union State", already covered in the same ash? Or will these killings and suffering of millions be for a few hundred square kilometers of radioactive land, the capture of which will allow them to declare themselves victors and "raise ratings"?
What struck me most was that these inhumane plans were voiced from the podium of the St. Petersburg forum by characters who call themselves "Orthodox".
"Orthodox" what? If Orthodox Christians, then their plans have as much relation to the faith that Christ brought to people as hell has to paradise. I believe that from the point of view of the values of Orthodox, as well as any other Christianity, these performers of "dances with nuclear bombs" have simply fallen into demonic possession. I would like to hear the opinion of the leadership of the Moscow Patriarchate on this matter. Perhaps this is exactly the case when it is worth remembering an anathema?" — wrote Mikalai Statkevich.
