A very rare parrot was spotted again on a remote island in Indonesia

On the remote Indonesian island of Buru, scientists have managed to spot a very rare parrot again — the Buru lorikeet, which was considered practically extinct for almost a century, reports The Independent.

Until now, the existence of this bird was evidenced only by a few museum specimens collected in the 1920s and one photograph taken in 2014. The new expedition not only managed to see this species again but also recorded its voice for the first time.

The Buru lorikeet is found only on Buru Island and nowhere else in the world. The bird was found in the mountainous region on the island's highest peak. Expedition members observed at least nine individuals.

The search was very challenging. Researchers had to overcome steep limestone slopes, cliffs, turbulent rivers, and dense forests without trails. According to them, only a great interest in this mysterious bird compelled them to embark on such a dangerous journey.

Scientists believe that the Buru lorikeet could not be found earlier because it lives much higher in the mountains than previously thought. It was the inaccessibility of these territories that helped the species remain unnoticed.

Currently, the Buru lorikeet is considered a species with insufficient information for an accurate assessment of its status. Researchers emphasize that the discovery is only the first step. Ahead lies the work of determining the bird's population, studying its habitat, and potential threats.

Expedition members noted that this discovery serves as a reminder of how many amazing and little-studied animals nature still holds. In their opinion, such discoveries offer hope and remind us of the need to preserve the planet's biodiversity.
