In Ruzhany, archaeologists found fragments of the foundation of a building from the time of Lev Sapieha
Fragments of an ancient foundation, which may belong to buildings from the time of Lew Sapieha, have been found in the urban settlement of Ruzhany, Pruzhany district. This was reported by the director of the Ruzhany Palace Complex, Elena Kubarko, writes BelTA.
During the next stage of restoration, associated with laying utilities to the theater building, workers stumbled upon ancient masonry. After inspection, archaeologists concluded that the identified fragments are likely remnants of one of the buildings that existed when the estate was owned by Lew Sapieha.
Sapieha began building the castle in Ruzhany in 1602. According to historical data, there were three houses near it - large, small and medium. The discovered foundation may belong to one of them.
"This is a unique find," Elena Kubarko noted. "Previously, we did not know exactly where the estate complex was located and what boundaries it had. Now it becomes clearer how large the estate was. Everything indicates that Ruzhany was mainly located at the foot of the castle."
The restoration of the Ruzhany palace complex has been underway since 2008. During this time, the central entrance gate, side wings, in which a museum was created, and the north-eastern arcade were restored. External restoration work on the two-story Eastern (theater) building has been completed. The building is planned to house museum halls, a storage facility, as well as a hotel and a cafe.
Lew Sapieha (1557-1633) is one of the most outstanding statesmen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He was chancellor and great hetman, one of the richest and most influential magnates, as well as a famous patron of the arts. His name, among other things, is associated with the adoption of the third Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1588 - the pinnacle of legal thought of this state.
