Ukrainian who committed a massacre in a Catholic monastery in Poland placed in a psychiatric hospital
In Poland, a court ordered a three-month pre-trial detention for 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen Ihor M., suspected of a knife attack on a Catholic monastery in Jarosław, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, writes Polsat. As a result of the attack, a priest died, and four other people were injured.
The District Court in Jarosław on Saturday granted the prosecution's request for the suspect's arrest. However, the man will be held under arrest in a stationary facility. The prosecutor's office stated that due to the suspect's health condition, he was not brought to the court hearing.
It was previously reported that the man is in a psychiatric medical facility. Forensic psychiatrists found signs of acute polymorphic psychotic disorders in him. According to the prosecutor's office, he exhibits strong psychomotor agitation, disorganized thinking, and a lack of logical coherence. Experts believe that he is currently unable to participate in legal proceedings and requires treatment.
However, the experts' conclusion concerns only Ihor M.'s current mental state, not his state at the time of the attack. His capacity to comprehend his actions during the incident will be assessed separately.
The attack occurred on the morning of September 24 on the grounds of the Jarosław Abbey on Benedictine Street. The Ukrainian, armed with a knife, attacked four men and one woman. One of the priests died, while the other victims sustained injuries.
According to the Polish prosecutor's office, before the attack, the man arrived in Poland from Germany. He was heading towards the border crossing to Ukraine but did not cross the border. After this, he entered the monastery grounds and went into the kitchen areas, where he likely encountered the first people he later attacked.
Polish authorities previously stated that the suspect faces severe punishment.
