Archaeological research at Kreva Castle, led by Oleg Dzarnovich, an employee of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, has yielded new results, according to the press service of the IH NASB.
Within the castle courtyard, the foundations of the bridge were found — two lines of stone masonry, upon which the wooden structures of the bridge rested, stretching from the so-called Small Gate across the castle pond to a hill in the courtyard. This provided defensive capabilities while simultaneously ensuring the functioning of an effective water regulation system.
It is known that during the construction of Kreva Castle, a fortification concept involving the creation of a flooded area around it was used. However, the defenders of the castle needed to be able to live on water. The castle bridge in the courtyard was part of such fortification art.
According to the restoration project, two bridges are planned to be rebuilt on the castle grounds, including the one whose foundations are currently being investigated.
Archaeologists found niches for bridge piles in the masonry structures, and under and next to the bridge — foundations of small buildings.
