Chinese President Xi Jinping will not hold a separate bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin during the BRICS summit in New Delhi. This was announced by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, writes The Moscow Times.
According to Ushakov, official negotiations between Putin and Xi Jinping within the framework of the summit are not planned. However, the aide to the Russian leader did not rule out that the heads of Russia and China might communicate informally, on the sidelines and "on their feet," holding a short meeting without official protocol.
Putin and Xi Jinping last met on August 31 in Bishkek at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states. However, they failed to make progress on the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline, through which Russia plans to supply up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas to China annually.
According to the South China Morning Post, the parties could not agree on the price of gas. China expects to pay about $50 per thousand cubic meters – roughly the same amount Russian consumers pay, or $120-130 – at the price for Russian industrial consumers.
Russia proposes to link the gas price to the price currently in effect for supplies via the Power of Siberia-1 pipeline – about $250-260 per thousand cubic meters. This is approximately 40% lower than Gazprom's average price for buyers in other countries, which is about $420 per thousand cubic meters.
