Germany to Transfer PAC-2 Interceptor Missiles for Patriot Systems to Ukraine
Germany will transfer PAC-2 interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense missile systems from Bundeswehr stocks to Ukraine. This was announced by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during a meeting of the contact group for supporting Ukraine in the "Ramstein" format, reported "Suspilne".
According to the German minister, deliveries should take place before the start of the winter season. Pistorius noted that Russia had stated its intention to intensify attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, so the country needs additional protection against air strikes.
Boris Pistorius also urged other member countries of the group to check their own stocks of interceptor missiles and transfer them to Ukraine if possible.
In addition to PAC-2, Germany plans to increase deliveries of AIM-9 "air-to-air" missiles from Bundeswehr stocks. Berlin will also continue to transfer IRIS-T air defense systems and their missiles to Ukraine.
Pistorius reported that Ukraine plans to additionally order several thousand IRIS-T guided missiles. The purchases are expected to be financed through a European Union loan.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an agreement by EU countries to provide Ukraine with the necessary components for Patriot systems. According to her, another tranche of 3.2 billion euros will allow Ukraine to more effectively defend its airspace from Russian attacks.
Additionally, the European Commission approved Ukraine's application for the purchase of missiles for Patriot systems using a European loan of 90 billion euros. Ukraine had requested more than 2 billion euros specifically for the acquisition of these missiles.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, previously called on countries with interceptor missiles to transfer them to Ukraine, including ammunition whose shelf life is soon expiring.
