"One of the worst." Expert evaluates mushroom season

Summer is coming to an end, and the mushroom season-2026 can already be provisionally evaluated. Well-known Belarusian mushroom picker and blogger Alyaksandr Harbatsevich shared his opinion with smartpress.by.

— This mushroom season, if not the worst, is definitely one of the worst in the last 10 years, — Alyaksandr emphasizes.

— About 5 years ago, it was a very dry summer, and the first mushrooms appeared in early August, but this year noble mushrooms haven't really appeared yet.

I've been in the forest almost every day since the beginning of June. In all this time, there were literally a couple of "flashes" when it was possible to collect one or two baskets of mushrooms in small areas of the forest, if you managed to find them first.

The interviewee adds: the mushroom failure began even in spring, when morels — some of the most popular mushrooms in the world — should have grown in the forests.

— According to the analysis of the experienced Bobruisk mushroom picker Maria Nikitko, who has been studying the reaction of morels to weather for 18 years, after frosty snowy winters there are always a lot of these mushrooms, — explains Alyaksandr Harbatsevich.

— This year, the weather conditions were exactly like that. Moreover, for several days the daytime temperature rose to +15 degrees, and at night it dropped to +5: such a temperature regime is maintained by the Chinese on their morel farms. Based on all this, we expected a large harvest of morels, but in reality, there were almost none. This was the worst season in 18 years. There are no explanations for what happened, neither from "quiet hunting" experts nor from mycologists.

Alyaksandr is convinced: this season shows that there are some changes in nature that people have not yet discovered.

— I asked the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus about the situation with morels, and scientists suggested that to find an answer, one needs to analyze not winter and spring, but the autumn of the previous year, because that's when mushrooms begin to form, — says the mushroom picker.

But the whole autumn is still ahead — perhaps it will delight Belarusians with an abundance of forest gifts.
