Russian government allowed selling substandard fuel instead of gasoline
The Russian government has temporarily allowed the sale of gasoline and diesel fuel of lower environmental classes K2, K3, K4, and K5 — corresponding to "Euro-2", "Euro-3", "Euro-4", and "Euro-5" — at gas stations from September 1, 2026. The permit will be valid until June 30, 2027.
Previously, such fuel could be supplied by oil refineries under internal contracts, but its sale at gas stations was restricted. Now, it can be sold at retail under general market conditions.
The Russian Ministry of Energy explains that this is a temporary measure aimed at aligning retail sales rules with previously adopted decisions on the production of fuel of various environmental classes and helping to maintain the stability of the domestic market.
At the same time, gas stations must inform customers about the environmental class of the fuel so that they can independently choose the appropriate option.
