An interesting lot related to Belarus appeared on the German Mehlis Auktionen. This is the painting "Tree by the Pond," whose author is listed as the renowned artist Ferdynand Ruszczyc, originally from our lands.
The presence of this lot was noted by Illia Andreeu, a researcher of ancient Belarusian graphics and cartography, and a book publisher, who currently lives in Krakow. He writes on Facebook:
«There's an interesting situation with this painting. The provenance is unclear — if there were anything to write, they certainly would have. The painting is not dated, but signed F. Ruszczyc Bohdanow, so one can assume it was painted in our Bahdanava.
Therefore, the question of authenticity remains, as fakes are common, and there are many of them. Moreover, an auction house like this won't provide any guarantees.
Nevertheless, the work looks authentic. Not a study, not something from the 'peripheral areas' of his work. Large format, on canvas. Truly a museum piece.
But the price will be... It's hard to imagine who could compete with Polish collectors, apart from Belarusian IT specialists. I wonder if they will ever be ready.»
The initial price for this painting is set at 1000 euros, but it will clearly increase during the bidding process.
Ferdynand Ruszczyc (1870—1936) was a renowned landscape painter, graphic artist, and set designer. He was born in Bahdanava near Valozhyn, where he created his main paintings and where he is buried. It was Belarusian landscapes that formed the basis of many of his works.
