Girl severely burned during leisure, but ambulance didn't come. Why?
While relaxing at Minsk's Tsnyanka, barbecue lighter fluid accidentally got on a girl's legs and caught fire. She sustained a burn injury. The victim's friend, and later the girl herself, called an ambulance. But after a conversation with the dispatcher, the team did not come to her, so the girl had to get to the Emergency Medical Hospital by taxi on her own, where she received the necessary assistance. As a result, the situation was investigated by medical authorities.
The Health Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee reported that thanks to the automatic call recording system, it was possible to reconstruct the chronology of events.
The first call came on August 16 at 18:39. The dispatcher was informed that a girl at Tsnyanskoye Reservoir had sustained a burn and her legs were severely burned. In response, the paramedic advised her to take an anti-allergy medication and apply Panthenol to the skin.
Three minutes later, a repeat call was received. To the question of whether an ambulance could do anything and why it refused to come, the paramedic replied that an ambulance does not respond to sunburns. After this, the girl asked where the burn unit was located. The dispatcher was about to connect her to the hospitalization department, but the call was interrupted before connection.
During the check, the service employee explained that she perceived the call as a request for help with sunburn. However, the caller did not clarify that the injury was sustained as a result of lighter fluid catching fire.
However, the ambulance service also acknowledged a mistake on the part of the specialist: the dispatcher did not clarify the circumstances of the burn, which ultimately led to an incorrect assessment of the situation.
Following the investigation, information about the incident was communicated to all employees who receive calls. In addition, the algorithm for questioning regarding the reason for calling "burn" was supplemented so that in the future, dispatchers would обязательно clarify how and under what circumstances a person received the injury.
