The "Popuri" publishing house has released a Belarusian translation of Joel Chandler Harris's "Uncle Remus Tales," translated by Serzhuk Miadzvedzeu. The book is richly illustrated by artist Maryna Zhvirblya, writes bellit.info.
The series of books by writer Joel Chandler Harris, "Uncle Remus Tales," is famous worldwide. The stories are based on African-American folklore from the southern states of America.
This collection contains 34 witty and informative tales (suitable for reading with children aged 4 and up). However, the book will be interesting not only to young readers but also to adults, partly because the translator chose a strategy of stylization when recreating it in Belarusian.
In the original, for current speakers of literary English, the tales sound unusual and read much like a slightly processed live folklore recording. Therefore, when searching for an appropriate intonation in our language, Siarzhuk Miadzvedzeu was inspired, among other things, by Belarusian ethnographic records from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The book certainly won't let either small or adult readers get bored. And the humor and wisdom of the stories in it will show how important it is to maintain cheerfulness and find a way out even of the most difficult situations, no matter what.
