Chinese Airliner Makes First International Flight, Challenging Boeing and Airbus

China's C919 passenger airliner has left the country for the first time, completing its first regular international flight. The Air China aircraft departed from Beijing and landed approximately two hours later in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, writes Euronews.

This is an important milestone for the Chinese aviation industry and the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), which develops the C919 as a competitor to America's Boeing and Europe's Airbus.

The C919 is a narrow-body passenger aircraft designed for a maximum of 174 passengers. In its class, it is similar to the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo. China expects to gradually introduce this airliner to the international market, but it is still far from truly competing with the two global aviation giants.

One of the main problems remains that the C919 still uses a significant number of foreign components. Additionally, the aircraft has not yet received certification from major aviation regulators in Europe and the USA. This significantly limits its operational and sales capabilities in Western markets.

Initially, COMAC planned to fully switch to Chinese components by 2025 and capture about 10% of the country's domestic aviation market. However, these goals could not be achieved within the specified timeframe.

At the same time, the Beijing — Ulaanbaatar flight is planned for gradual development, and in the future, it could become daily. The Chinese company also actively showcases its C919 to representatives of the global aviation industry, including at international airshows.

Meanwhile, even China itself has not yet abandoned Boeing and Airbus aircraft. In May, the country ordered 200 aircraft from Boeing, as well as spare parts and engines. This indicates that Chinese aviation will continue to depend on Western manufacturers for a considerable time.

By the end of 2025, COMAC delivered 32 C919 aircraft to customers. In the first half of 2026, eight more airliners were handed over. For comparison, only in 2025, about 100 narrow-body Airbus aircraft were delivered to China.

COMAC expects to significantly increase production and produce up to 200 C919s annually by 2029. However, for this, the company needs to substantially expand its production capacities and strengthen supply chains.

Experts note that creating an aircraft is only half the battle. Equally important are establishing mass production, ensuring stable supplies of engines and other components, and proving the reliability of the airliners during years of operation. The lack of even a small part can lead to production delays.
