"Yandex" started adding forests to maps to hide Russian military facilities
Russia may have hidden a missile position amid Ukrainian drone attacks that targeted Kronstadt in early June and July.
"Yandex" has started to modify satellite images in its mapping service to hide Russian military facilities. As discovered by the Finnish broadcaster Yle, a forest image, added with a graphics editor, appeared near Kronstadt where a missile position was previously visible. Meanwhile, on foreign services like Google, Apple, and Microsoft, missile batteries near Kronstadt are visible in images taken before April 2026.
Russia may have hidden a missile position amid Ukrainian drone attacks that targeted Kronstadt in early June and July. However, according to Marko Eklund, a former Finnish intelligence officer, "from an operational point of view," such an approach seems "quite meaningless," as the West and Ukraine do not rely on Yandex maps but use their own resources for striking.
