In France, a reactor at Western Europe's largest nuclear power plant shut down due to a jellyfish invasion

At the Gravelines nuclear power plant in northern France, one of the reactors was shut down and the power of another was reduced due to a massive jellyfish invasion. Currently, only two of the station's six reactors are operating in normal mode, reports France Info.

EDF announced that on Wednesday around 4 PM, power unit #3 was preventively shut down after a large number of jellyfish once again entered the filtration systems at the sea water intake.

This reactor was only reconnected to the grid on August 18 after a similar incident. For safety, the power of reactor #2 was also reduced.

Power unit #4 remains shut down since August 10 after the first massive influx of jellyfish, and reactor #5 is undergoing scheduled maintenance.

Massive jellyfish invasions near the Gravelines NPP were already recorded in August 2025. At that time, all reactors gradually resumed operation within two weeks.

The appearance of jellyfish near the northern coast of France is a common seasonal phenomenon, however, in recent years, large invasions have been observed more frequently in summer.

The Gravelines NPP is considered the largest nuclear power plant in Western Europe. In July, France had already been forced to shut down three nuclear reactors due to extreme heat.
