The Aydın public prosecutor's office in Turkey has launched an investigation into the newspaper Aydin Denge. A publication appeared on its social media page with the headline "Erdoğan Died." Four media representatives were detained as part of the criminal case, writes the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
As reported by the Turkish publication Cumhuriyet, on August 25, an image with the caption "Erdoğan Died" was published on the Aydin Denge newspaper's account. The link led to an obituary on the publication's website, which reported the death of a local resident named Gülşen Erdoğan.
Since verbs in Turkish do not change according to gender, the phrase about the death of a person with the surname Erdoğan sounds identical for both a woman and a man (Erdogan Vefat Etti).
In response to the publication, the Aydın city prosecutor's office initiated a criminal case under the article "public dissemination of misleading information." As part of the investigation, the newspaper owner Emin Aydın, editor-in-chief Yeşim Ülker, and journalists İslam Keleş and İrem Delis were detained. It is reported that they were later released from custody but were placed under judicial supervision.
According to Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code, intentional dissemination of false information is punishable by imprisonment for one to three years.
