"There's a Point in Searching." How the search for climbers missing in Kyrgyzstan is progressing

In the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, the search for a group of climbers continues, among whom are two Belarusians – 43-year-old Maxim Palyanski and 60-year-old Nikolai Sviridov. The last time they, along with Lithuanian citizen Sergey Rubtsov, made contact was on August 2. How the operation is being conducted and why specialists still consider it worthwhile, Onliner reports .

On July 20, three climbers arrived in the city of Osh, obtained border passes, and reached the starting point of their route in the Kyzylsu River gorge. The satellite phone did not work throughout the expedition, so communication was sporadic, via a Chinese operator. It was for this reason that the rare messages from the group did not contain precise coordinates.

On Saturday, August 1, all three ascended the summit of Kurumdy Peak (6613 m) via the north ridge. The next day, the last message came from the group, stating their readiness to depart on August 4 at 10:00 AM. The vehicle arrived at the designated location twice, but the climbers were not there.

Since August 7, the search has been conducted by a rescue team from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, as well as volunteers. The next day, a storage tent was found at the base camp, but no people were nearby.

From August 8 to 10, the search was complicated by bad weather conditions — there were snowfalls, and the upper part of the route could not be surveyed. On Tuesday, the weather improved, and rescuers were able to launch drones several times to inspect unexplored sections of the presumed route.

The relatives of the missing climbers created a special website where they publish the latest news and details for financial assistance. Recently, information appeared in the media that the group allegedly did not have insurance. However, Maxim Palyanski's wife, Katerina, assured an Onliner journalist that "the group was insured."

"The insurance covers search and rescue operations with a limit of 10,000 dollars. One helicopter flight completely exhausts this amount. Everything else is paid for by the families. Therefore, fundraising is open," explained Alexander Smirnov, head of a special group of experienced climbers. "Maxim and Nikolai hold the title of 'Snow Leopard' — having climbed all five seven-thousanders of the former USSR. All three together climbed Revolution Peak. Such people know how to endure long in an emergency, so there is a point in searching."

On Tuesday, August 11, Maxim Palyanski's wife, Katerina, flew to the search area. Today she is expected to arrive in Osh to personally participate in the operation. At the time of preparing this material, no traces of the group had been found.
