A whole residential complex was built from plastic bottles in Panama
In 2012, Canadian Robert Bezo, who moved to the Panamanian archipelago of Bocas del Toro, noticed the large amount of garbage left behind by tourists. There were especially many plastic bottles. The man joined a waste recycling project and suggested using PET bottles as a building material.
Thus, the Plastic Bottle Village project gradually emerged – a residential complex where used plastic bottles became part of the walls during construction.
Bezo, who had experience in the manufacturing sector, developed a special modular system. Empty bottles were placed in steel cages, which were then connected to each other and integrated into the walls of the buildings. Depending on the size, one cage could contain from 120 to 300 bottles. Such modules allowed the creation of buildings of various sizes and configurations.
By 2017, the project had built two houses and an unusual four-story castle, named "Castle of Inspiration." Its construction used about 40 thousand plastic bottles from water and carbonated drinks. The castle can still be visited today in the Bocas del Toro archipelago.
The project's creators claim that this technology not only reduces the amount of plastic waste but also allows it to be used in construction instead of traditional materials.
A similar experiment was carried out in Costa Rica, where a house was built from recycled plastic. About 7 tons of plastic waste were used for its creation, from which special blocks were made that connect to each other like a construction set.
