Russia's Foreign Ministry provides unexpected explanation for explosion in elite Moscow restaurant
According to independent media, the target of the attack was the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, General Alexander Chaiko, who is accused of war crimes, but Russian diplomats have a different version.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the first time issued an official comment regarding the explosion in the Moscow restaurant Balzi Rossi, which resulted in 5 deaths and 19 injuries.
According to a statement by the Russian Embassy in Italy, the goal of "Kyivan terrorists" was an attempt to intimidate Italians working in Russia.
"It is clear that by planning a terrorist attack in one of Moscow's best Italian restaurants, the Kyivan terrorists wanted to frighten Italians working in Russia, to show them that they are also under attack and can become the next victims of scoundrels at any moment," writes the Russian Embassy in Italy.
Russian diplomats state that "only thanks to the vigilance and selfless dedication to his professional duty of a Russian security service employee, Chef K. Alfieri from Naples and members of his team were not harmed."
They also provide official figures: "Unfortunately, there were casualties. Five people died, and 19 restaurant visitors sustained serious injuries."
"It has now become definitively clear that the explosion in the Balzi Rossi restaurant and other terrorist attacks in Russia, Monaco, and elsewhere are evidence that the Ukrainian terrorist plague is already beginning to spread across Europe, and particularly in Italy," summarize representatives of the Russian foreign ministry.
At the same time, independent journalists and Z-bloggers point to a completely different target for the attack.
On August 1, the restaurant, closed for private service, was celebrating a 55th birthday. The main candidate for the birthday celebrant is named as the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, General Alexander Chaiko, who turned 55 on July 27.
Chaiko himself, according to available information, was not harmed. However, his daughter and son-in-law were reportedly injured.
General Alexander Chaiko commanded the offensive on Kyiv in 2022 and is under EU sanctions due to his involvement in war crimes in Bucha.
