Milei supported Bolsonaro's son in Brazil elections. He called President Lula a thief

Brazil recalled its ambassador from Buenos Aires after the Argentine president criticized the Brazilian president, calling him a "thief" and a "convict," writes the BBC.

Javier Milei attended a rally in São Paulo on Sunday, marking the start of the presidential campaign for right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro — the son of the country's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned. Presidential elections in Brazil are scheduled for October.

Without naming Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Milei spoke disparagingly about the Brazilian president, appearing alongside Flávio Bolsonaro. He stated that Bolsonaro is the only one who can "stop Lula."

Brazilian diplomats later stated that the Argentine leader had insulted the Brazilian government, its people, and its democracy.

In response on Sunday, Lula stated that he would continue to govern the country "without anyone's interference."

"In Brazil, we do not allow anyone to interfere in our internal affairs," he said.

According to AFP, Brazil's ambassador to Argentina, Júlio Bitelli, was expected to return home between Sunday and Monday.

Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced last year to over 27 years in prison for preparing a coup d'état aimed at retaining power after his defeat to Lula in the previous elections.

Milei also called Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over Jair Bolsonaro's case, a "bald scumbag."

Moraes had previously denied Milei permission to visit the former president when he was under house arrest in the country's capital, Brasília.

In 2018, Lula was sentenced to 12 years in prison in connection with a large-scale corruption scandal and a bribery case but was released after serving just over 18 months behind bars.

In 2021, the Supreme Court annulled Lula's convictions, and in the following year's presidential elections, he narrowly defeated the far-right incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro, winning 50.9% of the votes.
